Studio Notes #92
Hello there, Very Fabulous Folks. Here are this week’s Studio Notes™—quick bits delivered to you each Friday.
🎥
Christopher Nolan's upcoming The Odyssey film was filmed entirely on IMAX cameras. Because of the size and sound dampening enclosure, it means it got in the way of the actors when doing scenes together. So, mirrors were used so the actors could still see each other while filming. Everything I'm hearing about this movie is getting me more excited to see it.
🎙️
I can't vouch for their performance, but I'll give props to Ohma Microphones for doing something unique with their custom enclosures. Ribbon and condenser mics made in East Los Angeles. If they sound as cool as they look, well then that'd be fantastic.
🗣️
I did a little Tiny Talk with Ty Finck this week. He asked some great questions, and it was fun doing a little behind-the-scenes over here. I'm feeling like Ty and I are perhaps kindred spirits and I've enjoyed his work and interviews with other cool folks. Thanks for having me, Ty!

Who knew there was an Ephemera Society of America? And a delightfully refreshing “nostalgic hypertext”, bare bones website to-boot (no, really). There is some real type inspiration gold buried in here when you start poking around. For example, Sheet Music Art from the Ragtime and Jazz Eras is quite the goldmine on its own.
New Typeface!

Earlier this week I released my latest typeface, Kyroh. It's an “imperfect desert display sans” inspired from an old Egyptian hotel's luggage tag. You can grab the font now on its own, or join my Secret Club and get it along with all of my fonts + other perks.
This Week’s Poll
When designing, do you start with a pencil to sketch or jump right on screen?
Last week, I asked which app you most enjoy creating vector art with. And Illustrator unsurprisingly won. But I stupidly left out a few options. Namely, Sketch and Affinity (which is free!).
Danmade This Week

Now that Kyroh is out into the world, I'm digging back into Hubano, a typeface I designed last year while riffing off some Cuban cigar box lettering. I loved bringing this one to life, but it was in just one, thin weight. I've started a big overhaul, adding two heavier weights which I'm really excited about—mostly to expand it uses (which are pretty limited and specialized right now).

That'll all for this week. I hope your summer is peaceful so far, and see you back here next Friday!
Cheers,
