ABOUT

Hi, I’m Dan Cederholm. SimpleBits® is my type foundry + goods shop + tiny design studio and blog based in Salem, Mass.

Never perfect * Always a-okay

We manufacture handmade letters and numbers (and goods with those letters and numbers on them) for people like you. Our fonts are (hopefully) unique-but-familiar display typefaces that’ll help designers make interesting and fun things. Often inspired by vintage lettering and type, our alphabets and goods are genuine and shipped worldwide.

SimpleBits has also been a design studio and blog for over two decades (still need to import a mountain of old archives). We are, at times, available for logo design projects—please do reach out.

The best way to keep up-to-date on everything happening around here is to subscribe to our newsletter. From there, you could also upgrade to a Gold membership for bonus content, free fonts, shop discounts, our Simple Type Club chat, and more. Gold keeps the lights on here at SimpleBits.

About Dan Cederholm

A designer, accidental-entrepreneur, and maker of handmade things, Dan is founder of SimpleBits. He writes books about design and web, records music in his garage, and occasionally hosts a podcast. His love of type turned into designing display fonts, letterpress printing, and learning new things. He’s a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captain and possibly the world’s worst fisherman. Previously, he co-founded Dribbble, a popular community for designers he created with his friend Rich Thornett in 2008 (acquired by Tiny in 2017).

In a previous life, Dan was a standards-based web designer and keynote speaker at events around the globe. He worked with companies like YouTube, Microsoft, Adobe, Google, MTV, ESPN, Electronic Arts, Blogger, Fast Company, and more. He was handed a TechFellow award in 2011 in San Francisco by the nice fellow that plays Sheldon on Big Bang Theory. Dan also co-founded and designed Cork’d, which was the first social network for wine aficionados (later acquired by Gary Vaynerchuk).

Books by Dan

Over the years, Dan has written eight books on design, CSS, web standards, and accidental-entrepreneurism. They are/were printed on paper and it's possible you may even want to read them.

Colophon

This website runs on a thoroughly-modified version of Ghost, while the shop runs on a thoroughly duct-taped version of Shopify. The main typeface is Söhne by Klim Type Foundry and the rest of the display typefaces are made by Dan (primarily Cartridge and Vault Alarm). We use SendOwl to deliver font files.
