Studio Notes #37

Hello, Magical Beings. Here's issue #37 of Studio Notes™—quick bits delivered to you each Friday.

🦈

This summer is the 50th anniversary of Jaws, and some boatbuilder fans recreated the fated Orca and it's now on display around various docks in Martha's Vineyard. I hope to get over there at some point to see it, as well as some other festivities they have going on the island. The story of how the animatronic shark malfunctioning turned into a genre-defining horror movie formula is such a classic. I never get tired watching Jaws 1–3.

In June, 1970, Dock Ellis pitched a no-hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates—while completely high on LSD. It's a remarkable story, and an audio interview with Dock was turned into a short animated film. It's well worth the 4½ minutes to hear this unbelievable, hilarious tale.

I've always wanted to dip into making my own mechanical keyboard, but I usually stop and realize I probably don't need yet another hobby ;-) If you're curious, you'll learn an immense amount from Noah Jacobus's 2½ hour video documenting his assembly of a custom keyboard with Font Awesome's icons. Loads of insight packed in here.

🎹

I kind of want one of these Mono Tone single-key pianos. I was unable to find any other info about them other than this short video, but it looks like a well-made, legit piano—but with just one single key. A tiny house, minimalist's dream at, perhaps, a fraction of the cost?

What are you working on?

I've been buttoning-up Scorekard for an official release, designing specimens, posting a free pre-release version for Gold members, etc. I'm hoping for a public release next week! I'm very happy how this one came out in the end. It has a lot of character—but not so much it limits its use. Scorekard has some great utility in it, with its quirks making it non-boring. Hope you dig it.
