Studio Notes #35

Hello, Exquisite Tastemakers. Here's issue #35 of Studio Notes™—quick bits delivered to you each Friday.

🎨

I'm a big fan of Nathan Yoder's illustration work, so it's a no-brainer to subscribe to his new, upcoming podcast which will focus on AI's impact on graphic design, illustration and art in general. This is a super-timely, potentially-stress-inducing topic—it'll be damned insightful getting Nathan's perspective here.

These handmade, metal rings from Berlin are ingenious. Jewelry crafted with LEGO-brick-compatible connection points for endless (and extremely affordable) customization. Geek Chic. Brick Bling. Luxe Lego. The juxtaposition is excellent.

🧭

Speaking of cool juxtapositions, I don't know if this is real or not—but I sincerely hope it is. A perfect, working compass that looks exactly like the one in Minecraft. Is there a word for objects that are both lo- and hi-fi at the same time? Apparently I love these objects.

🥇

Cueing up this new video series of interviews hosted by Soleio Cuervo, First of Kind explores conversations with design pioneers and design founders. I'm particularly excited to hear from the legendary Susan Kare, creator of the original Macintosh icons and fonts. Meeting Susan back in 2015 still remains a career and life highlight.

What are you working on?

Now that The Great Migration is mostly complete, I'm back to chipping away at our next typeface, Scorekard, inspired from a vintage, paper, baseball game, scoring card device. Adding lowercase to this one! With a particularly wonky lowercase r that kind of reminds me of Gonzo's nose. It's horribly inefficient in terms of horizontal space. And I love it.
