Studio Notes #77

Howdy, folks. Here are this week’s Studio Notes™—quick bits delivered to you each Friday.

🧳

I love Antiques Roadshow. And the best segments of the show are the ones where the owner is genuinely shocked about the value of what they've brought in. Usually it's something that's been passed down or found in an attic or purchased at a yard sale for $1. This round up of the top 5 viral appraisals is a fun watch to get your mind off anything you don't want to be thinking about. It turns out history, craftsmanship, and storytelling is valuable.

My appreciation for miniature things requires me to share the work of Derek Lin. Combining everyday, life-sized objects with carefully-crafted miniature figures and expert lighting—these little worlds are captivating.

🌌

We took in an IMAX showing of Project Hail Mary on opening day, and hoo boy that was an incredible film. Again I'm impressed with: 1) An original story. I didn't read the book but will probably try. 2) Practical effects! Apparently no green/blue screens were used and large, real sets built for much of the movie. 3) Puppets. I will leave it there. 4) An outstanding score and music curation. 5) Emotional sci-fi a la Interstellar (another favorite). 6) A hopeful tale involving our place in the universe and the thought provokeyness (sp?) it provides. I give it ★★★★★ or 👎👎.

🗞️

I just subscribed to Petrolicious Post. Not another newsletter, but rather an actual printed newspaper that covers “the golden age of automobiles and motorsport” (ed. note: I know, more car stuff, sorry). I'll report back when I receive my first issue. It got me thinking though. I'd subscribe to many more printed newspapers about other niche interests. Actual paper. Sent in the mail. Giving the words printed some elevation and importance. A newspaper about type, or analog synths, or cameras, or retro video games, or record collecting, or fly fishing, or...you get the idea. Someone needs to streamline an HTML–to–newsprint workflow that makes all this easy peasy. Call it Smudged. Or something like that.

This Week’s Poll

What are you working on?

This week, I finally started kerning Beeswacks, which will be our next type release! Also, hopefully you noticed the new poll above. We're adding a weekly poll to Studio Notes™ because why the heck not? I'm envisioning a random, sometimes relevant, arguably interesting, and rarely important question for you each week.
