Interesting article about Googie, “the car-centric architectural style, characterized by neon signs and dramatic rooflines”’. I love this mid-century style and now realize it's what made Route 1 in nearby Saugus, MA so unique. There's only a handful of Googie-esque signs and architecture left there. But it all makes sense how it evolved from trying to gain visual attention from drivers.

I've been really enjoying Malcolm Guite's videos. He's a poet, priest, and scholar that invites you into his book-laden study and smokes pipes and drinks coffee or pints and then dives into Tolkien or poetry as if you're an old friend over to chat. He also sprinkles spirituality into things in a very easy-going, non-forceful, practical way. Reminds me of how my Dad would do the same. His enthusiasm a variety of things is endearing. I just want to share a pipe and pint with this guy someday.

I was on the fence about sharing this Instagram account I found. I love the illustrations and use of color! Digging in a little though, it's not clear the art isn't generated using AI. Some commenters assume it is. The artist doesn't seem to dispute that, but it got me thinking about generative art and it seems, at a very minimum, it should be clear whether it was created with AI or not. Curious about your thoughts?

I'm a fan of Robert Egger's films. They all have a distinct vision and message. The use of natural light. Nosferatu was no exception, with amazing visuals, score, acting. Creepy as hell. But I'm giving it 3½/5 stars simply because I really wanted to eat my bucket of popcorn and most of the movie is eerily silent. It's incredibly awkward to chew in a packed theater when it's that quiet. Also, it's dark, so find a decent projection for this one (Dolby would probably be ideal). Also, can we get Bill Skarsgård a nomination for Best Supporting based on his voice alone? ★★★½☆☆

What are you working on?

I spent some time finally getting Secret Type Club to be an actual subscription that renews each year, cleaning up some code and hacking some others. You can now join the club by either purchasing 3 or more fonts (you'll automatically get a free year of membership + instant 25% off discount) OR you can also buy (or renew!) a membership on its own without purchasing fonts for just $20/year. I'm now tying membership to your shop login so I can add automatic discounts and other things. (Also, purchasing 6 or more fonts gets you the free member card and lapel pin :)

If you became an STC member in 2024—THANK YOU! You'll get a free membership in 2025 as a founding member. Please reach out with any questions or suggestions. I'm looking forward to growing things and making more fun type in 2025.

Have a great start to the New Year!
