For whatever reason, our little guy wanted out 6 weeks earlier than expected. Jack Murphy Cederholm was born Sunday afternoon at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He’s a tiny and beautiful 4lbs 8oz. Both Kerry and baby are doing great. The unexpected surprise means spending a few weeks in the hospital before we can go home. But it also means we need to quickly buy Jack a Christmas gift (not to mention all the other last minute preparations we’d planned for after the holidays).
Such a wide range of emotions over the past two days. Fear, joy, anxiety, and those other emotions that you can’t even apply a word to. Right now, we’re just hoping he continues to grow and that we can get home as soon as possible.
Here’s to life’s surprises.

Our first was 5.5 weeks early, only a little heavier than Jack, in for 2 extra weeks, and on oxygen for 2 after that. Wires, lamps, and IV lines everywhere.
Haven’t been able to tell the difference since she was 6 months old. I have to look at the pics to even remember.

If it’s any comfort at all, this will likely be the most stressful experience you’ll ever have – but it will end! ;)

Our first son was five weeks early and we were just as unprepared as could be. The time he spent in the NICU helped us with learning more about how to care for our little one. Make sure you ask lots and lots of questions of the nursing staff, they ‘ll probably be happy to help with just about anything you want to know.
#1 is 10 years old now, and is as tall as his mother and no one can tell he was early.

Although I don’t know you, we share something that is quite wonderful. My son George went through a very similar situation as Jack. George was 7 weeks premature and 4lbs 7oz. Now at 18 months he is perfectly healthy and happy. You and your wife are definitely blessed… and so is Jack.

It’s been quite a week, but Jack’s improving each day. We’ve been essentially holding vigil at the hospital (now in Beverly) and it looks like he’ll be there for at least another week until he’s strong enough. It’s difficult not to have been able to bring him right home, having all those mental preparations thrown out the window. All that matters now is that he gets what he needs in order to come home.

These things never seem to go as you have planned. Our first arrived a week late and after 24 hours of hard labour required an emergency c-section to deliver. But, OMG, is she ever worth it.

We just celebrated Ariana’s 1st Birthday/Christmas – she too was early (5 weeks)… Apparently she didn’t want to miss Christmas so she showed up on the 25th of December 2004… Now she’s a little rug rat – scooting all over the place – don’t know what I’m going to to when she starts walking…
Your coming year will fly by and will be filled with the most incredible experiences – BTW, nap when he does – trust me…

Very late to the party but congratulations to all three of you!
As a parent of a 3lb premmie(3 months early) I know the heart wrenching u must endour. Be strong and brave. Bond with ur child, ensure their place on this earth and all will be as it is meant to be, and u will come out of it a better person. My premmie is now 16 years old and doing fine. Don’t dwell, just react. all the best to u and ur wife.

Congratulations on your new arrival! I know first-hand how scary it is to have a preemie. My son decided to come 5 weeks early and was also under 5 pounds. He spent his first 12 days in the neo-natal intensive care unit because of an open duct between his heart and lungs. Now he’s a wonderfully precocious 6yr old and I can never shut him up! :) Many blessings to you and your family. This too shall pass.

We got our little 4-week-early preemie last June, 2005, and although he’s a little smaller than average, he’s doing great. A quick search through the comments revealed the one word missing to describe your new baby. The one word my Grandmother used when my son was born: Miracle.
I know I’m a little bit late to the party in terms of saying congratulations, but… congratulations! We had a very similar experience with our boy Henry last year. He came 6 weeks early on 12/21.
