Remember, if the &lt;a&gt; in your list item is going to have a :hover (or mouseover) state, make sure you put the regular image in the background of the  and the mouseover image in the &lt;a&gt;(:hover). If you put the regular and hover images in the &lt;a&gt;, you&#039;ll get flickering in PCIE on hover.
Dan&#039;s practice of putting the image in the  is perfect for this. If you did this, and now you *want* hovers, adding the :hover state to the &quot;li a {}&quot; should be cake.
Definitely a classic technique.&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/a&gt;
